Course Description
İNG 002: Departmental English II is an academic-focused course which aims to develop students’ reading, listening, speaking and writing skills. For İNG 002 course, speaking skills are specifically focused on and these skills are integrated into the course hours and also supported by extra materials.
The Reading section consists of the study of reading texts, and students are asked to analyze these for main ideas and details; to understand the purpose of the texts with relation to coherence and cohesion; to realize abstract and concrete information; and to make inferences by using critical thinking abilities.
The Listening section consists of the study of listening passages both on academic lectures and short informative talks. Note-taking techniques will be introduced to help students understand information and use it to speak on a given piece. The same skills as in the Reading section will be studied.
The Speaking section focuses on the ability to prepare and present reports on a variety of subjects, to conduct group discussions by using appropriate techniques, and to speak and comment on the subjects studied by using critical thinking and speaking strategies.
The Writing section asks students to analyze the purpose, audience and type of writing required for a specific subject. Writing a proper summary of lectures and reading texts using specific techniques will be studied. Analyzing the register and style will be the focal point in this part.

Course Objectives
To expand students’ vocabulary by using context to figure out meaning, by defining terms and by using word formation;
To improve their reading and listening skills through a variety of strategies such as previewing, predicting, skimming, scanning, recognizing main ideas, analyzing style and tone, separating fact from opinion, understanding point of view and figurative language, increasing reading speed;
To develop their writing skills in report writing, and their summarizing skills for academic context;
To improve their speaking skills through different types of oral activities including mini report presentation, and group discussions.
Course Outcomes
1. Infer the meaning of unfamiliar words encountered in reading and listening materials from context. They will be able to define academic and technical terms and use them accurately in relevant contexts.
2. Comprehend texts more effectively by using strategies such as previewing, skimming, and scanning.
3. Identify the main idea of the texts they read or listen to, distinguish supporting details, and analyze a text’s style and tone to infer the author’s purpose and emotional stance.
4. Differentiate between facts and opinions, identify the objective and subjective aspects of a text, determine its perspective, and interpret the language used.
5. Produce written and oral summaries using effective summarization techniques in an academic context.
6. Develop their academic writing skills by preparing a short report on a given topic, present their reports, and effectively use presentation techniques.
7. Actively participate in group discussions, express their ideas in an academic manner, and apply discussion strategies.
